Dolphin Watching news

Melonhead whales

Once again, my dolphin watching boat crew called and said there was something I should see if I had time. There was a pod of melonhead whales moving by offshore. I grabbed my cameras, family, a small boat and headed out. After taking a couple of rolls of film from the surface I decided to see if I could get any photos from underwater. As always, being quite leery of getting in the water with large toothed whales I slowly approached a few in the pod. At first, they were more worried about me than I was of them, but very quickly decided to take a closer look at this "2 legged thing". For the next 2 hours the whales in this pod took turns coming within .5 meters of me. Three or four of them would slowly swim in front of me, daring me to touch them and then moving their tails at the last moment. On four different occasions I was able to sneak a quick touch, at which all of them would zoom off about 20 meters and talk about what had just happened, and then come back for more! This was really hilarious and would have made a great video, as they were making a lot of noise and obviously very excited about being touched. When I would get back in the boat to change film these whales would wait for me to finish and then resume where we left off. Even sticking their tails out of the water like they were waving at us. My children who run off at the sight of a gecko had no worries at all about sitting on the bow while these "beasts" jumped only centimeters from their feet. This was a very rare and special experience, but I wish everyone could have a chance as it would play a big part in saving the whales and dolphins on our planet.
